The Best Collab Albums There (N)ever Was

As a rap fan, I often find myself pitting artists against each other and determining who would out rap who.

But rap shouldn’t always be focused on rivalry – which is why I came up with a list of artists I think should join forces and use their talents to benefit each other.

Below are a few of my dream collaboration albums:

Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole:

Although a joint project between the two hip-hop heavy weights has been rumored for years, it’s never materialized. But the few times we’ve had the privilege of hearing Kendrick and Cole connect on the same song, it’s been nothing short of amazing. Their chemistry is undeniable, and imagine the bars we’d get: two of hip-hop’s most highly regarded contemporary lyricists pushing each other, bar for bar, track for track. I think the outcome would be a “Watch the Throne” level project, with “To Pimp a Butterfly” acclaim.

Lil Wayne & Drake:

Considering Lil Wayne and Drake’s history, it’s surprising they don’t already have a collab project. The two have known each other since 2006 and worked together closely since Wayne signed Drake to Young Money/Cash Money Records. One thing fans have demanded from the duo for over a decade now is a collaborative album. Wayne and Drake both share a perfectionist work ethic, dedication to their craft – and an affinity for women. All that translated through music is surely the recipe for a masterpiece.

Nipsey Hussle & Meek Mill:

Nipsey and Meek: the joint album that was planned, but never came to fruition. Just months before Nipsey Hussle was senselessly shot and killed, him and Meek Mill had been working on an album together. Meek confirmed the two have songs recorded, but not enough for a complete project. Knowing what could have been but never was is upsetting. I can only imagine how motivational and inspiring the collab would have been, and hopefully the tracks recorded will eventually see the light of day. Until then, we just have to dream and use “Victory Lap” as our motivational music.

Childish Gambino & Chance The Rapper:

Add this to the list of joint projects discussed, but never released. Childish Gambino and Chance The Rapper have a similar sound and undoubtedly complement each other nicely on wax. The few songs they have together became some of their fan’s favorites, but despite this the artists don’t have a body of work together. The last time we got a track from both Gambino and Chance was in 2013, and since then their sound has changed drastically. I think a lot of people underestimate how necessary an album between the two is. Combining Chance and Gambino’s unique, versatile style and pop undertones would make for an interesting, widely appealing project.
